Stray Dogs
If you find a stray dog, please call the Ashtabula County Dog Warden’s office immediately at 440-576-6538. Stray dogs are taken to the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League on Green Road in Kingsville, Ohio where they are housed for three days before becoming the property of the APL.
If you wish to keep the dog, there are a few steps you must take first:
- The dog must be scanned by a local veterinarian to check for a microchip;
- You must place a found ad in the Star Beacon for a minimum of three (3) days;
- You must contact the Ashtabula County Dog Warden and the Ashtabula County APL to file a “Found Dog Report” with each agency.
The key to being able to keep a “found” dog with as few problems as possible is to be able to prove you have made every available attempt to find the dog’s owner.
